Once Upon a Time in a Land of Ivy and Elves

Above is a photo of the kittens I called the Elves and left is their momma Ivy back in the fall of 2006. I must confess I didn't think they were very pretty when I picked them up. They had lank wispy fur and were skinny, but they just needed good food and care to grow into great beauties.

Ivy went to a home with her lookalike daughter and they are more beautiful every time I see pictures of them. The gray brother went to a home with another kitty waiting to become his best friend.

The black kitty and his brown tabby brother went to a home together and all have been living happily every after until I got word yesterday that the black kitty, Gus, is gravely ill with lymphoma. We are so sorry for Gus, his brother Max and their adoptive family.

Names for the Vanalikes

It is always a struggle to name a foster cat before you have had a chance to get to know them. It is the same problem with newborn kittens.

Vanna, the momma cat, got her name because she looks like the breed of cat known as the Turkish Van. When I did a little research on the breed I learned that cats that just look like the Turkish Van are called "vanalikes".

Well, I loved that word and that is how this group of kittens will be known. However, they still need names and S and I have been toying with "V" names (Vance, Vanessa, etc.) or Easter names since the kittens were born on Easter weekend. The Easter names seem more fun. We are considering Bunny and Bonnet for the two girls and Bo for the boy. Any suggestions?

Vanna and the Vanalikes are doing great. Life is pretty easy for a mom cat with just three kittens. They have gotten so fat so fast! She is a wonderful mother and her tendency to bite me seems to have disappeared since the kittens were born. Must have been hormones!

Spots

Look…

An even better view of some very cute spots.

Three kittens!!!

Today I was awakened (for the second time) at 7:24am, with a buzz from my phone alerting me to a text message that Vanna was having her kittens. I know, you have no idea who Vanna is, but you'll have to wait for a post from Denise filling in the details.

Yes, there are too many unspayed cats in the Twin Cities, but yes, cat people get excited about kittens, anyway. It's just in our nature. Are these the first kittens of 2008? I would say of Spring, but with 6 inches of freshly fallen snow that label doesn't seem appropriate.

Just a couple of fuzzy phone pictures so far. In the last news update three hours ago there were three kittens, all white with a gray spot on the head and gray tails. Carbon copies of Mom. Mother and babies are doing fine.

Happy Birthday to Juliet and the sausage kittens

March 1, 2007, during a blizzard, my foster cat Juliet gave birth to six healthy kittens.

They grew quickly and their round stomachs were too much for their tiny legs to carry so we called this group of kittens the sausages.

There were four black kittens. The twins, Jig & Jag, who were the first to be adopted. Jelly & Java, the boldest and shyest, were finally adopted together to someone who understands and appreciates them both; and Jake, a surprise brown tabby, and Judy, the only gray kitten who is the spittin' image of her beautiful mom.

Momma Juliet was adopted with Jake and Judy and the three are much loved and inseparable in their new home. We LOVE when our momma cats can go to a new home with at least one of their kittens. Too often the moms have a long wait after the kittens are gone even though in a few short months, they are all the same size.

Mother and daughter -- Can you tell?

The Fun Girls

Looking for FUN?!

I've got two beautiful foster cat girl cousins who are looking for a new home together. Lana and Starlet came from the same location. Lana came to me with a litter of kittens who have already moved on to new homes. Starlet arrived with her sister who has also found her new home.

Lana is just over a year old and Starlet is just under a year old, but they already look like twins. Both have shiny short black coats, but Starlet has a white star on her chest. Lana is fun-loving and outgoing and loves to be petted. Starlet is a little more shy, but she is the lap kitty.

They LOVE to play together and it's just fun to watch. Call 651-230-3263 for more information.

Rosie Update

Rosie came to me from another foster caregiver who had found her living outside and she raised her from a kitten. She was nearly grown up when I got her and a little shy around the other cats in my house, but she had the softest fur. Her original name was Dusty, but that just wasn't right for such a beautiful girl, so I adjusted it to Dusty Rose and called her Rose. That name stuck and she was adopted by a young woman who wanted her first cat. I got an update from her today and they are doing great! Rosie is proudly showing off the wonderful cat tree made for her by her adopter's dad.

I just wanted to tell you again how happy Rosie and I are that we found
each other. (last time you emailed I was in the middle of midterms so I
didnt really have time to type this up). She fits into my life
perfectly.

She's grown so attached to me! She always greets me at the door when I
come home, and wakes me up in the morning when my alarm goes off. She's
figured out that alarm means petting time and climbs up and lays on top
of me until she get snuggled. Everyone loves her; she's really come into
her own since she moved into my house. She's the little princess and she
knows it. She loves watching the tropical fish we have, and is not
nearly as shy as she was when I first met her. She's gotten a bit more
talkative too. She doesnt mew much (except when she want out of the
room) but she sure does chirp!

Thank you so much for doing what you do! You help create lots of happy
families!
