Charlotte and Amelia: Homes at Last!

Over two years ago, I took in a pregnant mom cat, Charlotte, from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue who soon had four kittens. Three of the four kittens were adopted within a few months, but no one chose Charlotte or Amelia. It was the longest I ever had had foster cats and the longer they stay, the harder it is to let them go. However, I could not continue fostering if I adopted them myself and I knew they deserved more attention in their own home.

CHARLOTTEThen I heard from one of my former Feline Rescue adopters (of my kitten Eloise) that she was looking for a cat for her mother. The two of them drove over and fell in love with Charlotte. Apparently, she made herself right at home:

UPDATE 1:
Charlotte and I are doing just fine. I think she likes me. She follows me everywhere and slept with me from the first night. K~ and I are both surprised. Right now she's sitting on the desk next to the computer. Anyway, shes doing just great and she says to say Hi to Amelia and Gilligan and the rest of the gang.

Charlotte's doing fine. Still sticking to me like glue...although I have noticed she's not quite as dependent as the first week or so. Still haven't introduced her to Eloise yet....maybe one of these days....... Poor Amelia. Hopefuly one of these days, she'll get her forever home and have different things to think about other than " Where has my Mom gone to?"

Another couple months went by without a home for Amelia and I decided to give her a chance at the Feline Rescue Shelter where more people would see her. Feline Rescue has agreed to take in two cats from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue at the shelter to help them find homes, so when there was a spot to fill, I took Amelia there. I've never suffered so over a decision for a foster cat. She had been there a couple of weeks when I stopped to visit and learned that she might be getting adopted that day with another cat from the shelter named Gilligan. Well, I've had a cat named Gilligan for ten years, so I took that as a sign and spoke briefly with the adopters. Time passed and I was so anxious for an update that I contacted them and got this great news:

I'm so glad to hear from you as we had such a short time to meet at the shelter. I hope you are well and enjoying your summer. I have loved having the summer off to bond with the kitties but am starting to gear up to go back to school.

I am happy to report that Amelia seems to be happy in her new home. My husband and I don't have kids or other pets so she and Gilligan are our only 'children'. We love them so much though it has been an interesting transition. Amelia is so much an alpha female, since she crossed the threshold, she has definitely been the boss. As a result, with Gilligan being a shy boy, we set up a screen door between the first and second levels of our house so they could sniff and view each other but have slow physical introduction. I so wish I had a photo of the night when Amelia decided she'd had enough and wanted to meet Gilligan so she climbed our modified screen door and made her way over!

GILLIGAN AND AMELIASince then, they have gotten to be fast friends and even snuggle and have taken to sleeping together, as well as playing, chasing and eating together. I'm a bit surprised but thrilled that they are getting along so well, so quickly. I've attached a few photos of her/them for you. Please know she's in good hands and that I'll be sure to send photos and updates about her.

Wayne and the Gang

Sometimes I wish we had a surveillance camera to see what the cats at the Adoption Center do when no one's around to watch. We came across this scene late Friday afternoon, after most of the people had gone home...

The cats who shy away from too much attention come out to play when the place quiets down. Whatever was going on in there, Wayne sure looks tuckered out!

Snickers and the Shy Cats

The quiet corner room at the Feline Rescue Adoption Center, sometimes called the library, houses a group of cats known affectionately as “the shy cats”. Some of these cats have lived at Feline Rescue for many years because they aren’t as adoptable as our more social cats. Most visitors don’t get a chance to interact with these cats, since they are pretty shy and can take a few visits to warm up to a new person. But Feline Rescue volunteers have developed close relationships with this great group of loving cats.



When I first met Snickers, she would hiss at me when I tried to play with her and swat my hand away if I tried to pet her. She was scared, and I learned that you just can’t move too fast with Snickers.


Today Snickers is one of my favorites at the adoption center (and I like to think that I’m one of her favorites, too)! She purrs and kneads her bed when I pet her. She loves to be brushed and likes to play.


Although Snickers is happy and well-adjusted to life at the adoption center, I think that she would be happy to go to a home someday. What friendly cat wouldn’t love a little more space to run around and some people to call her very own? She would just need patient, trustworthy humans and a little extra time to get familiar with new surroundings. And of course, she would want to bring along one or two of her best buds from Feline Rescue. Snickers thrives on the companionship of other cats.




In fact, most of "the shy cats" would probably not do well going to a new home all alone. Because they are bonded with each other and used to living with other cats, they would do better adopted in groups of two (or three). Once you have spent some time with these shy cats, you discover how wonderful and loving they can be. These cats would do well with quiet, patient, experienced cat-people who are willing to invest some time in making them feel safe. Earning these cats' trust is so rewarding!

Feline Rescue's Adoption Center: A Place for all Kinds of Cats

When you have nearly 70 cats under one roof, introducing new cats to each other is a big job. After new cats arrive at the Feline Rescue Adoption Center, they spend a couple of weeks in our intake room, where they are checked out, treated for any medical problems, and spayed or neutered if they haven’t been already. This introductory period gives Feline Rescue volunteers a chance to observe and evaluate the cats to determine where in the shelter they should be placed once they are available for adoption.

The Feline Rescue Adoption Center has a number of different rooms in which to place cats while they await adoption into their forever homes. The “shy room,” for example, is home to some of our shyer and older residents. Young, active cats, often take up residence in the “back room”, where they have plenty of space to run around and interact with other cats and people.

While living with so many other cats doesn’t always come naturally to a cat, most of our residents adjust well to their new environment and enjoy the company of other cats while at the shelter. But a few cats are more of a challenge when it comes to introducing them to the rest of the group. Some cats just don’t like other cats and would prefer to go to a home where they can be the only cat. These cats spend their time at the adoption center in private rooms or kennels when the other cats are out and come out to exercise with volunteers in the common areas when all the other cats are put away.

If you’re looking to adopt just one cat, consider one of these cats who would prefer to live in a single-cat-household: Giorgio, Raja, Pearl, Sasie, Zeda, Opal, Tomasita, Mekasch, Sonny, or Juniper. With homes of their own, the true personalities of these sweet cats would really shine!

We know that sometimes it’s hard to interact with cats when they’re in a kennel. So feel free to ask a Feline Rescue Adopter to help arrange a time and space for you to spend some one-on-one time with one of these special cats.
