Happy Easter, Bunny!

From Red Lake Rosie's Rescue:
Bunny was a beautiful long-haired tortie that was a surrender at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue a few years ago. RLRR is so thankful for the relationship we have with Feline Rescue where we are able to send cats by twos to be adopted. Bunny's story is one of the many success stories we have with Feline Rescue.

Yesterday I received this picture and message:

"I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for all that you do.
In 2012, after the death of my cat Boo-Boo, I decided to spend 2 days a week visiting the homeless cats at Feline Rescue. I love all the cats, even the snarky ones. I don't remember her exact surrender date, but in early 2014, a long-hair tortie that they named Bunny showed up from you guys.

All my recent cats, {Binky and Comet}, have been either feral or hated people. I seem to have a way with them. Bunny was definitely a problem. She kept attacking the volunteers when they would clean her litter box, kennel, and give her food and water. She did respond to a few people, and I was one of the fortunate few.

I had lost Comet's sister Sunny, my soul mate, in 2013, and, in the spring of 2014, Comet had a stroke. I didn't want Binky to be left alone if Comet didn't pull through. I figured no one would adopt Bunny the way she acted, so I brought her home. Comet did pull through, thank heavens, and Bunny has become an awesome family member. Of course she has the famous "tortitude", but she's really sweet. She doesn't like being picked up or held, but she often climbs up on us for loving. We live in a rural area and get mice, but Bunny totally loves hunting them.

She's very safe now. My cats are NEVER allowed outside where they can get hurt. If it hadn't been for you guys rescuing her and sending her to Feline Rescue, we wouldn't have met. I can't imagine our family without our Bunny. Shelters seldom hear about how their former charges end up, and I know I always love hearing the happy endings from adopters, so I thought I'd share Bunny's story with you. Thank you again for all you do."

Life is looking up for little Amelia

Red Lake Rosie's Rescue took in a cat from the White Earth Reservation- a little tabby and white female with a mangled leg. The owner said Amelia had been run over by car.  RLRR had her leg amputated and Feline Rescue was willing to take her into foster care.

It turned out that she wasn't a kitten as we assumed, but a tiny nearly-adult cat weighing just 3 1/2 pounds. She was shy and very shut-down when she arrived in foster care -- probably in pain and shock for all that had happened.

She wasn't fond of being coaxed into moving around for physical therapy.

But, she quickly learned to love foster mom and foster dad.

Amelia even made friends with a little lion :-)

In addition to her mangled leg which was amputated and the road rash on her face which healed, Amelia's tail was broken and stiff in several places. One day her foster mom saw her out of the corner of her eye and she had a short tail! She immediately began to look around and there was Amelia's tail and a single drop of blood ;-o

No amputation required for her tail! It was healed on its own. The photo of the tail prompted what was probably the largest number of comments ever from the other Feline Rescue foster caregivers on their private Facebook page!!

Amelia is perfectly happy with her abbreviated tail.

And, she became fast friends with a another tabby in her foster home.

This beautiful girl will be ready to find her forever home very soon :-)

Happy Mother's Day for Mom & kittens from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue

A skinny dehydrated mother cat who had given birth to five kittens on April 1 was dropped off at Red Lake Rosie's Rescue (on the Red Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota) a few days later, after two of the kittens died. Karen Good (caregiver at RLRR) fed the hungry mama and kept the kittens alive with formula until the mama started to produce milk. The little family came down to the Twin Cities on the next transport to be fostered by Feline Rescue, Inc.

MAMA AND KITTENS AT RLRR
Mama is a pretty calico and her surviving kittens are all orange and white boys. I am their foster mom, so I got them set up in my bathroom/nursery.

MAMA SCOTCHEROO
THREE LITTLE MEN IN THE TUB
Kittens are safely in the tub lined with padding and fleece and a cozy teepee den. Mama is free to come and go from the tub when she needs a break to eat or use the litterbox.

It wasn't long before the tent bed was too small for the whole family, but the kittens kept using it for naps until they learned how to climb the tent bed and then they slept on top!

PINWHEEL SLEEPING FORMATION

CREEPING LAPS
Originally, I thought I would call the group the April Fools because of their birthdate and name them after famous red-headed comedians, but the kittens were just too yummy and sweet, so I named them after favorite golden treats with fun names.

SNICKERDOODLE
Mama now gets time out in the rest of the house and the kittens are approaching six weeks of age and are anxious for life outside the confines of the bathtub. The bathroom will be space enough for them for a few more weeks. They will be ready for adoption after spay/neuter when the kittens reach 12 weeks of age. Contact Feline Rescue foster adoption coordinator Joan at 651-705-6264 if you are interested in meeting them!

Ron Howard

A little orphan kitten from White Earth came to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. He was a short-haired orange tabby male, less than eight weeks old and motherless since he was 2 weeks old we were told.

He was small and stunted and not eating well. We are grateful that Feline Rescue was able to take him into their foster program.

UPDATES FROM FELINE RESCUE:
#1: This is the kitten from RLRR. He FINALLY learned to eat on his own two minutes ago (fingers crossed). Been syringe feeding him since Thursday night. So relieved that he hit that milestone. He came with the name Donnie but I think he should be Ron Howard or Opie Taylor. This red headed boy actually has freckles on his cheeks.

#2: After days curled up in a ball, spending all day in his bed and only leaving to use the litter box, this little guy darted out the door when I went to check on him this morning. So relieved. Syringe feedings and sub-q fluids and medicine have finally made a difference. He even ate on his own! He prefers Fancy Feast. And that is what he'll get.

#3: William Blake and Ron Howard have become inseparable ever since they met a few days ago. What is it with grey & white guys being best friends with orange guys?

Olive and her precious six

A pregnant mama cat surrendered to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. She was two years old, tiny and very sweet, but we knew by her big lumpy belly that she was ready to give birth.
OLIVE AT RLRR

Feline Rescue agreed to take her into foster care even though it is the peak of the summer kitten season.

She arrived on a transport from RLRR on Monday July 20 and was to her foster caregiver who had a lovely little room all ready for her. She walked confidently out of the carrier to check out the room and quickly settled into the window to breathe the fresh air. The evening of the next day she had the kittens.

NEWBORN KITTENS
It was a long, exhausting delivery of six kittens for the little mama. The foster caregiver helped by cutting the cords to release the last two kittens from their placentas, so they could crawl over to mom to nurse. She rested and let them nurse and now she is super mom! All the kittens are clean and active and growing quickly.

Mama Olive loves attention for herself and her foster caregiver is happy to oblige. It's hard to believe that six kittens were stored in this tiny girl! We're all so happy this is her last litter.

Sister Mama cats & kittens journey to Feline Rescue

On March 29, WE R Furr Feline Rescue, on the White Earth Reservation, posted this note with a video on their Facebook page:

Picked up this brood tonight. These are 2 sister cats that each had 5 kittens a week apart. One group is a week old & the other group is 2 weeks old. The moms take turns feeding the kittens. They will be going to a foster home tomorrow. Then when the kittens are old enough, everyone will be spayed/neutered, shots etc. & be adopted out to good homes. With this addition to the rescue tonight, we are at our highest number so far.
SISTER MAMAS AND BROOD AT PET HAVEN

I wasn't surprised when I saw that Red Lake Rosie's Rescue stepped up to help find placement for this large group. Both Pet Haven and Feline Rescue offered to take them. Then we got word from White Earth that a group of six small orphaned kittens had been turned in to them. So the Sister Mamas traveled from White Earth to Red Lake to Pet Haven just briefly and then to their foster home with Feline Rescue. The six orphans are headed to Pet Haven.

Update on Tristan/Oliver

UPDATE FROM ADOPTER:
Well, it's been one year since we brought Oliver to his forever home, and we're still as much in love with him as we were when he was a little kitten.
He's a handsome boy, and is healthy and happy. He just had his annual checkup, and the vet said that if he could have a cat (his wife is allergic), he'd want one just like Oliver.

This kitty has so many endearing qualities. When Gary and I sit down in the family room, Ollie races in to his window perch -- he wants to be where we are. I still get "lovings" in the morning, but it's a bit more restrained now. No more drooling, so no soggy nightgowns!

He also comes up to me in bed every morning to suggest that it might be breakfast time. He gets his head scratched, then goes to the foot of the bed and curls up until I get out of bed. He's a lot more patient that his predecessors!

We play together a lot, and he rotates through favorite toys. My mom just gave him a little mouse that looks pretty real and he *adores* it! He's a pretty good little mouser, and has already nailed a couple of the real ones in our basement. Yay, Ollie!

He also has some funny quirks, in particular, his love of "sand baths." I finally decided to fill another litter box with clean litter, to remove that "ick" factor! The sand bath box comes out every day while I clean his litter box. He rolls and flips in it, and has a wonderful time!
He's a happy little kitty, and we're so very, very glad that he came to us. Many thanks again for rescuing him, fostering him and giving him to us. We couldn't be happier!

Kathy, Oliver's Mom

(In the photos, Oliver was having fun with a big box.)

Oliver (formerly known as Tristan) came to Feline Rescue foster care from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue. Read his kitten story in his first blog post here.

Puffs

A very nice police officer found 2 tiny kittens (just getting teeth and only drinking kitten milk) on the highway in Red Lake and brought them to Red Lake Rosie's Rescue.

I worked with Feline Rescue and found a foster home for these tiny orphans, but learned that the next transport from Red Lake would not be for several days. I knew how busy Karen was at the shelter and how much care little orphans require, so I took the afternoon off work and drove up to Bemidji, met Karen to get the kittens and drove right back down with them -- an eight-hour roundtrip. The next morning I took them to their foster mom who is a specialist with tiny orphan kittens. We decided to call them "The Puffs", for obvious reasons :-)

REPORT FROM FOSTER MOM:
The kittens are doing great! Eating hard and soft food and learning to snuggle with humans. They are so beautiful!
