Caring for Community Cats

Feline Rescue outreach volunteers are hosting a Community Cat Day on Saturday,October 18th  from 1-3 pm at our adoption center.

Learn about community cats and how Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) helps keep outdoor cats stay happy and healthy and saves more lives by reducing the number of homeless cats in our community. We will share information on caring for community cats and hold an outdoor shelter building workshop.
You can come to help work, bring along supplies, or show up with a finished shelter of  your own to display or donate to cats in need. For ideas, go to Alley Cat Allies - http://www.alleycat.org/ShelterGallery.

Or just come to network with other community cat lovers and bring along some cat food for our community cat food drive.
As the weather turns cold, outdoor cats need your help. For advice or assistance on caring for outdoor cats, Trap-Neuter-Return, low-cost spay/neuter programs, or this event call FR outreach volunteers at 651-295-3758 or email outreach@felinerescue.org.

Oodles of Bundles of Joy

Spring has sprung! It's that time of year when the flowers start popping out of the ground. The air gets a little warmer. The sun shines a bit brighter. And lots of kittens are born. Lots. To all of  us at Feline Rescue, Spring is also known as Kitten Season!

With so many kittens in foster care (or expected to be in foster care), we need a little help. Kittens need blankets, beds, toys, formula, and food. To help these new mothers and mothers to be, Feline Rescue is having a Kitten Shower!

Help us celebrate our new arrivals on Saturday, April 26th. Drop in between 1:30pm-5:30pm at Chuck & Don's Edina Store (6821 York Ave. S., Edina 55435). There will be treats, games, and prizes! Also, meet several of Feline Rescue's foster caregivers and learn more about Feline Rescue's foster program, volunteer opportunities, and cats.

You can order items from our wish list -
http://amzn.com/w/1T0P7FIH24X7K (which will be delivered straight to Feline Rescue). If you're not an on-line shopper, you can also purchase the items from your favorite local store and then drop them off at the shower (Chuck & Don's in Edina on 4/26). The items that we need most are:

  • KMR kitten formula
  • Wellness Core kitten food - both canned and dry
  • Cash donations
  • Pet store gift cards
  • Toys
  • Blankets
  • Beds

In typical baby shower fashion, we'll have treats, games, and prizes. Attendees can enter the drawing for fabulous door prizes, which include: A brand new cat tower; a professionally matted & framed, hand cross-stitched cat picture; a new cat bed with tapestry design; and a fabulous cat carrier.

No shower is complete without silly games! We'll have pictures of past momma cats and you can guess how many kittens they had; match the cat to kitten face; and bingo!

Finally, at the shower you can meet one of the kittens your donation will support. There will be cute, fluffy, cuddly kittens in attendance. Different kitties will appear hourly. Kitten appearance times are: 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm and 4:30pm.

Feline Rescue Kitten Shower - the happening place to be to play games, win prizes, meet fluffy kittens, and donate supplies. We hope to see you there!

Feral Cat Fun

Thanks to everyone who came out to donate and participate in our Feral Cat House Challenge and Food Drive last Sunday!

Alisha and Alaina stole the show with their fabulous entry. The shelter, made from two rubbermaid bins, included both an entrance and emergency exit hole. Silver insulation was glued to the top and around the outside of the smaller bin, which fit tight against the outer bin. To frame the holes and adorn the shelter, Alisha chose Angry Birds duct tape, "because of the bird controversy," she said.  Staggered entry holes cut down on the wind, and patio blocks on top keep the shelter stable.

If you are caring for feral cats and need a shelter, contact us at outreach@felinerescue.org.

Feral Cat House Challenge and Food Drive this Sunday

On Sunday October 27th from 1-3, Feline Rescue's outreach volunteers will hold a Feral Cat House Challenge and Food Drive. We invite you to come learn how spay/neuter and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) can help save more cats' lives and help reduce the number of homeless cats in our community.

Enter the competition with a cat house of your own or come help build shelters for outdoor cats that you or others are caring for. You can also bring canned or dry cat food for our cat food drive or donate to our spay/neuter campaign. This week, volunteers are helping to spay/neuter stray cats in a colony on St. Paul's east side. This year, Feline Rescue's Spay-Neuter-Outreach program has helped spay/neuter over 600 community cats!  With your help, we can help improve even more cats' lives.

October 16th is National Feral Cat Day

Join Feline Rescue in observing National Feral Cat Month.

Feline Rescue's Feral Cat House Challenge,
Food Drive and Feral Cat Information
Sunday, October 27, 2013
1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Feline Rescue shelter, 593 Fairview Ave N, St. Paul

You have three reasons to join us on Sunday, October  27th

1.   Participate in the Fabulous Feral Cat House Challenge.  Colorful, creative, technologically advanced, or simply super functional—we want to see what you can come up with to help keep outdoor kitties safe and warm this winter. Design and build your own shelter or customize one you purchase.  The challenge is yours. Bring your cat house to the event by 2:30. We will award in two categories—most creative and warmest for a MN winter. After the competition, keep your shelter for cats you are feeding or donate it to our outreach team to pass along to other cats in need.  For ideas, go to Alley Cat Allies - http://www.alleycat.org/ShelterGallery

2.   Bring some cat food – canned or dry – for our community cat food drive.  The outreach team will distribute the food to those feeding feral cats.

3.   Build your own shelter.  Materials you need to bring are: 1 Rubbermaid-type 18 gallon plastic container with snap-on lid, 1 Styrofoam cooler that fits inside the plastic container.  We can help you cut the holes.  We will provide the straw.  Dress appropriately for outdoor weather.  View this type of shelter at Alley Cat Allies - http://www.alleycat.org/ShelterGallery

**The outreach team does have a few houses already made that we are willing to give to those feeding feral cats.  We have a variety of different kinds of houses.**

For advice or assistance on Trap-Neuter-Return or low-cost spay/neuter or this event, call FR outreach volunteers at 651-642-5900 ext 4 or email outreach@felinerescue.org

Help spread the word to spay and neuter

Feline Rescue outreach volunteers kicked off our Spay-Neuter Campaign for Community Cats on Saturday. Throughout October, volunteers will be conducting an educational campaign to inform people in St. Paul about proper care of community cats and to let folks know about low-cost options to spay/neuter cats.

This friendly, unneutered, neighborhood cat volunteered to carry the door hanger with our important message home to his caretakers. (Don't worry, this guy was a willing participant: no cats were harmed.)

If you want to volunteer to help with our next literature drop in the Frogtown/Thomas-Dale area, or if you need information on spay/neuter or caring for outdoor cats, please contact outreach@felinerescue.org.

For more information on community cats and how you can help them, check out this video from Alley Cat Allies:

Advocating for Cats

Join Feline Rescue in observing National Feral Cat Day. Alley Cat Allies launched National Feral Cat Day October 16th, 2001 to promote Trap-Neuter-Return, to raise awareness about feral cats, and to recognize the millions of compassionate Americans who care for them.

NFCD_webposter1

Feline Rescue is sponsoring a Spay/Neuter Campaign for Community Cats during October.  Volunteers will hit the streets in targeted areas of St. Paul to distribute information on caring for outdoor cats, make sure that folks are aware of low-cost options for spay/neuter, and to offer assistance for spaying/neutering outdoor cats.  To volunteer with the campaign, email outreach@felinerescue.org.

Then join us for Feline Rescue's Fabulous Feral Cat House Challenge and Food Drive on October 27th from 1-3.

When the weather turns cold, outdoor cats need shelter to survive.  Colorful, creative, technologically advanced, or simply super functional—we want to see what you can come up with to help keep outdoor kitties safe and warm this winter.

Design and build your own shelter or customize one you purchase.  The challenge is yours. Then bring your shelter to our community cat open house at our adoption center on October 27th from 1-3. We will award in two categories—most creative and warmest for a MN winter. After the competition, keep your shelter for cats you are feeding or donate it to our outreach team to pass along to other cats in need.

Whether or not you enter the competition, feel free to stop by and see what others have created. And bring some food—canned or dry—for our community cat food drive.

If you'd like to build a shelter for feral cats you are feeding but don't know where to start, email us in advance at outreach@felinerescue.org.  We can give you a list of supplies to bring so we can build one together on October 27th.
