The Chipmunks are 7: Nelson and Alvie

NOTE FROM ADOPTER TO FOSTER MOM:
It’s that time of the year again and June 1st was my cat Nelson’s 7th Birthday. Both he and his sibling Alvie can be seen in the photos – Alvie lives at Calhoun Pet store and upon a recent visit she is doing wonderfully!
As you know, this year has been a challenge and a struggle for Nelson. He developed a horrible allergy to any food except raw rabbit, without the raw food the poor little cat has some very bad symptoms. He also developed some neurological issue which caused him to obsessively chase and bite his tail. He had a very bad time of it and behaved like he always had a horrible itch which would make his skin roll and twitch constantly. He was struggling to simply get through each day without an itch or twitch and was very upset, annoyed, and unhappy.

He also became very aggressive towards my 17-year-old kitty Sagan, he would attack her for no reason and terrorize her when she used the litter pan. These encounters were very serious and a couple of times he injured her.
Luck has been on our side! When I experienced these problems the first person I reached out to was you as his foster Mom. With each issue you contacted other Feline Rescue foster parents and they came out in numbers to give me suggestions to help to resolve Nelson’s issues. I am happy to report that now he is on a raw diet and is taking Prozac. He is now able to live a happy healthy life in his own skin.

He still wants to attack Sagan, but now, when I’m not home, either he or Sagan spends time in my bedroom. Nelson does fine when he is supervised around Sagan, but not when left alone. Since Sagan is 17, she does not mind spending time by herself in my bedroom, I’ve provided her with food, water, toys, and a litter pan. Seems like no amount of raw food or Prozac will deter Nelson from this behavior, but at least I have a reasonable and workable solution.
I was very concerned about him and afraid I would not find a solution to his health problems, I was so disheartened by just the thought that he may not be able to have a healthy happy future. I am so grateful to you and all the Feline Rescue people who provided me with alternatives and suggestions.

I love Nelson so much, he has captured my heart and become a huge part of my life and family. You and others in feline Rescue have proved time and time again that you will go to the ends of the earth to see that all kitties don’t just go to a forever home, but thrive in those homes.

A heartfelt thank you to you and Feline rescue, here’s to Nelson’s 8th birthday!

You are the BEST!!

Libby's past year

A year ago we were still trying to track down that last cat (#67) that had been left behind on a foreclosed property without food or water.  Between the heat, hour-long drives, swarms of mosquitoes like we’d never seen before, and possums that always seemed to get in the way of our traps we all just wanted to give up. But we’d seen this orange and white cat sadly sitting on the deck, watching us come and go, long after we’d caught all of its friends. It had appeared in the middle of the night on the wildlife camera that we put out to make sure we didn’t leave anyone behind.

Late one night, just after the fourth of July, Sue and Sarah called to say that she had finally gone in the trap and they were on their way home with her. She was not too happy to be caught, but we were glad to have her.

Now named Libby, #67 joined some of her friends from the same property in our foster home. She was very scared but seemed happy to be back with her pals. She spent lots of time cuddled up with Marlin. After Libby’s friends Trix, Marlin, and Luca moved on, she bonded with other foster cats in the home. Libby gets along with anyone—so long as you are a cat!

She is getting better with people too. She loves to play with us and is especially receptive to petting at mealtime.  Even though she doesn’t seek out a lot of interaction from humans, I know that she is truly happy to be back indoors, well-fed, and among friends. Libby has had a great year in foster care. This next one will be the year to find her forever home.

Why you should adopt us both together

Socks and Sadie explain:

Youngsters like us have boundless energy and require lots of interaction. We will definitely want to interact with you A LOT.

But we can keep each other occupied while you’re doing necessary things like sleeping and working. If we keep each other entertained, we won’t need to engage in destructive behaviors like climbing the walls or chewing on plants and stuff. (Not as much anyway.)

We will bite and wrestle—totally normal kitten behavior by the way—each other instead of people so won’t develop bad habits. Finally, as kittens, we tend to be active at night. If you have both of us, we can chase each other around instead of chasing your feet under the covers.

So you see, kittens like us that are able to stay together with a littermate or another kitten tend to be happier, healthier, better-socialized pets. And that means you will love us even more.
