7 Things To Do This Winter for Stray Cats

Gracie and Bashful are stray cats who are provided with food, water, and a garage for shelter by the kind neighbor who discovered them.

Minnesota winters can be brutal and dangerous to homeless cats. Want to help the feral and stray cats in your community this winter? Check out Feline Rescue's simple tips on how to help lost, homeless, or feral cats outdoors in the winter:

Maddie in Her New Home

Maddie, now known as Kahlua, is loving her new home. We received an update from her family that will certainly make you smile.

Hello Feline Rescue,

I just wanted to write with a little update about our kitty Kahlua (aka Maddie when she was at the shelter). My husband and I adopted her in August and she has fit into our little family marvelously! She likes to sleep curled by us at night and greets us with kisses in the morning. When we got her, she was a little overweight, but we've got her food managed and are finding more and more toys she likes to help keep her active. Even our friends can tell that she's lost weight! She seems to be getting more playful now too. :) We've had fun discovering all her little quirks along the way (like laying in her water dish and meowing at the garbage truck).

She's doing so well and is just the best cat! We couldn't be happier.

I attached a few photos we've taken of her (two of them are her sleeping, still one of her favorite activities!)

Thanks for all you do!

Oliver's first Christmas

Update from adopters of Oliver (fka Tristan) who came from Red Lake Rosie's Rescue to be fostered and adopted out by Feline Rescue:

We just love this little guy to pieces! He's a very happy little cat and we're very happy that he has made his forever home with us. He's a very vocal little kitty, lots of trills (right on cue -- here he is behind my chair, trilling away), tiny meows, and frisky squawks. He still loves his plastic springs, but right now Mr. Fleecy Thing (a fleece ribbon on a stick) is his favorite toy. It's a hoot watching him stalk it!

He's been good as gold with all the Christmas things, including the tree. Nice change from our last kitty who would chew on the light cords -- yikes! He loves to burst out from beneath the tree when I throw one of his springs. Not sure what the tree skirt is going to look like when I pack it away for the season, but that's okay!

He's developed a really cute habit of hiding and then leaping out at Gary when Gary comes into the family room. When Oliver hears Gary coming, he'll stop whatever he's doing to scamper over to his hiding place for the big pounce! He still keeps his claws in when playing with us, and I've been able to trim his claws regularly. He doesn't like it, but there are treats afterwards.

He's a very healthy little boy, with a very healthy appetite. He eats mostly canned food (his definite preference), and would like to eat a whole lot more than his daily ration!! He weighs about ten pounds now, so he's right where he should be. He snuggles at our feet or knees at night, coming up to get his loving from me two or three times a night. He still "nurses" and probably always will. I don't mind except for the soggy spot he leaves on my jammies! His fur is so soft and he's very cuddly. He loves to be cradled in my arms like a baby (and you know I love doing it!).

He's a very social little guy. All of our friends and family just love little Oliver and think we got a real winner (we think so, too!). There's one group, though, he *really* loves -- my knitting ladies. But all that moving "string" is just too much for him, and he usually winds up banished to our bedroom. He gets lots of extra frisky time after everyone has packed up their yarn and left.

So that's the report on our Oliver. Happy holidays!

Tiger Thursday

Some cats consider themselves like tigers. They look like a tiger. They have tiger attitude. They have a big, tiger personality. The only trouble is they're not tigers (but don't tell them that!). Although an actual tiger wouldn't make a good housepet, these orange tiger cats would make an excellent addition to your family. Below is a list of all our wonderful orange kitties looking for a home:

  • Arnie
  • Boris
  • Charles
  • Cheveron
  • Duke Ellington
  • Ellie
  • Henry and Wiliam
  • Kentucky
  • Nala
  • Timmy
  • Tuffy

(The cats above in blue are cats in foster care. Call Joan at 651-705-6264 to visit one of these wonderful tigers in their foster home. All other fabulous feisty tiger cats are at the shelter.)

Adopt an orange tabby tiger and make your Thursday an extra special day. Tiger Thursday. Catch a tiger by the toe. That tiger just may catch you by the heart.

Happy New Year from Group Hug Central

The "Quiet Room" at our adoption center is often occupied by cats who appreciate the company of other cats. Right now, this is particularly true. These sweet kitties all embrace the motto "there's always room for one more cat in every bed".

Rockie moves over (sort of) to make room for Tony.
You could adopt Leah, Jelly Bean, and Concho together for an instant cat family!
To meet Jelly Bean (one of our amazing blind kitties), Princess Leah and Concho, Tony, and little Rockie  stop by Feline Rescue's Adoption Center.

Gray Kittens Looking for Homes

Gray kitties are special since we usually don't have very many at our shelter or in foster care.  But this month we've got a bunch of gray babies looking for homes.  These 3-4 month old kittens would love to be in their forever homes to celebrate the New Year.  Please contact our foster adoption volunteer at 651-705-6264 for more information.

Connor and Patrick Together Forever

Yesterday those who've known Connor and Patrick received one of the best gifts ever.  The brothers were adopted! This is what wipes away all the sad tears of rescue and replaces them with happy tears.

Connor and Patrick have been at the Feline Rescue shelter as long as I've been volunteering and I, along with many other volunteers, always wondered why these sweet guys had not yet found a home.  Connor and Patrick came in to rescue March 2005 and after almost 8 years they are finally home.

The family that adopted the brothers also took home Tippy, another special boy abandoned at our shelter in a box.

Merry Christmas!
