Fun with Fonzie

Fonzie is one of the most active and fun-loving cats at the Feline Rescue Adoption Center. Unfortunately, during visiting hours at the shelter, Fonzie is most likely to be napping in his kennel.

Don’t let this fool you. Once the other cats are away, the Fonz comes out to play! When Fonzie is out on the floor, the adoption center becomes his own personal sports complex. Fonzie likes to participate in all kinds of sports—especially soccer. There’s lots of power in those short, sturdy legs of his. And he’s always up for a game of catch (catch-that-fast-moving-feather, that is).

That’s right, Fonzie is a whirlwind of activity. He’s always willing to lend a hand with whatever needs to get done. Here he is helping some volunteers with a construction project:

He helps with laundry too. Here he is testing out some new beds to make sure they're soft enough for Feline Rescue's cats:

While Fonzie gets along fine with some cats, he has trouble getting along with ALL the cats here. That’s why he only comes out by himself or in a small group. But Fonzie gets along great with people! When his schedule allows, Fonzie even enjoys sitting in a lap to be petted. So if you really want to get to know Fonzie, talk to one of our adoption counselors about spending some time with him when he’s out and about.

To meet Fonzie, stop by the Feline Rescue Adoption Center or call 651-642-5900. ext. 3.

Abused Kitten Recovering

Flower was recently rescued from abuse.  This very sweet, 5 month old kitten has already undergone surgery to repair her leg.  Flower also came to us with a fractured pelvis and upon examination the veterinarian found that she had old fractures to her ribs.  We had initially assumed that her jaw had also been injured because her mouth was hanging open, but the vet found that a front tooth had been broken off at the root exposing the nerve.  Flower was holding her mouth open because of the extreme pain from her injured tooth.

Once she is well enough to leave the hospital Flower will spend as much time as needed recovering in a Feline Rescue foster home before beginning her search for a peaceful, caring forever home.

Please send good thoughts her way for a full recovery.  We hope to have some happier photos and update very soon.

If you can help with Flower's care, please contact Cathy at 651-230-3263, visit www.felinerescue.org or click the "Donate" button just to the right of this post.

Inexpensive Cat Toy

If you sliced, diced, or mashed an avocado for a recipe recently, don't forget to save the cleaned pit.  As Kanga and Christopher Robin (Feline Rescue foster cats) demonstrate in the following video, they make fun cat toys.

You'll just need to put it away at night unless the rumbling of an avocado pit across your floors doesn't keep you awake.

If you're interested in adopting any of our foster cats, please contact Cathy at 651-230-3263 or Joan at 651-705-6264.

Juno & her kittens!

This gorgeous family is ready for adoption! They are all very outgoing and playful, and very social with people. They've been raised in a foster home with a young toddler so they've had interaction with both adults and small kids. They are hard for me to tell apart since I only spent a short time with them, but as soon as we get more info from their foster family we will post links to their petfinder pages :) If you're interested in hearing more about them, please call Cathy at 651.230.3263.

Below is mama cat, Juno! She is very petite, in fact, she isn't much bigger than her kittens!

Mekasch: all dressed up and ready to go!

Arriving at a shelter can be quite a shock for mature cats who have always lived in a home. This is how it was for Mekasch. But now that she has gotten to know and trust the volunteers here at Feline Rescue, she has proved to be quite a loving little cat.

This face doesn’t lie: Mekasch is sweet as can be! And she has plenty of personality. Just look at her—all dressed up in those fancy, black-and-white duds!

Mekasch isn’t used to being around so many young whippersnappers. Certain cats scare her. She would absolutely LOVE to come home and be your one and only. Mekasch loves to sit in laps. She’s young enough that she still likes to play but old enough to stay out of trouble.

Mekasch has been at the adoption center for quite a few months now. But so far, this pretty girl has been all dressed up with nowhere to go. Don’t you think it’s time to come and take her home?

To meet Mekasch or to learn more about her, stop by the Feline Rescue Adoption Center or call 651-642-5900, ext.3.

Update on 2009 Tree Kittens

In early May 2009, Feline Rescue volunteers rescued 3 kittens from the inside of a rotting tree trunk. The tree was being cut up for disposal by workers using chain saws. The mother cat was seen, but could not be captured that day. She was live-trapped two days later and reunited with her kittens. The mother (Louisa) and 2 of the kittens (Mica and Mysty) had very unusual color and markings, which resembled those of an Egyptian Mau purebreed cat. The third kitten (Parker) was a picture-perfect tuxedo. All of the kittens and the mother have found wonderful, permanent homes. The two kittens who resemble Egyptian Maus were re-named by their new humans and given Egyptian names: Shu (an Egyptian god) and Maat (an Egyptian goddess).

According to their human caregivers, "Shu and Maat have been winning over our friends and the new vet and generally making themselves popular. She's up to 8 pounds and he's 12 or 13." In the photo, that's Maat with her head up. You have to look closely to see Shu curled up with her.

Bandit, Rascal & Bonnie

We posted about these cuties awhile back when they were still kittens. Well, they've grown into beautiful, friendly, playful & confident cats! They're almost a year old and still looking for their forever home! Be sure to read their cute stories on Petfinder (click on their names) for more information about them!
Rascal was being camera shy when I was over taking their photos, so their foster caregiver sent me this photo so you can see how handsome he is (and how bonded he is to his buddy, Bandit!) Rascal is shy when strangers come to visit, but he is a ball of love with his foster caregiver! Once he trusts you he is putty in your hands :)

For more information on this adorable trio, please call Cathy at 651.230.3263 as they are all in foster care.

Turtle Watching

Dante, fka Grigio, is already settled into his new home and enjoying another form of kitty tv, turtle watching.

Update and photos from his family:
Watching the turtles

Dante (Grigio) is doing very well!  He likes watching the turtles and he and our male adult cat Draco have started cuddling together and grooming each other.  I do not have any pictures of that yet but here are a few other pictures of Dante.

Noh-Face and New Buddy Billy

You may remember Noh-Face and his siblings from a blog post in December, Sweet Kittens Ready for Adoption.  It didn't take long for the trio to find homes.  They were all adopted last month and we just received a wonderful update from Noh-Face's family.

Noh-face adapted very quickly and is extremely happy and content in our home. We gave him free reign of the whole house right when we came home and he immediately took to Lexie and I, sleeping with us his very first night here. Our current 4 year old cat Billy was a bit curious about Noh-Face but he was never territorial nor did he ever hiss or growl at Noh-face. It took Noh-face about 2 days of minor hissing and growling to keep Billy away before he became comfortable and by day three they were tentatively playing with each other.

Now it has been over two weeks and Noh-face and Billy basically take turns chasing each other up and down the stairs and around the house and cleaning each other. They both sleep with us, Billy at the foot of the bed and Noh-face at the head of the bed where he can try and always touch both Lexie and I at the same time. The pictures we attached are of them atop their kitty castle, they sit and sleep on and in it and catch the sun from the window.

All said it has been wonderful for us to finally get another friend for Billy. Noh-face is also completely adorable and we enjoy interacting with him quite often. Thank you for providing an environment where Noh-face could get accustomed and comfortable with people and other cats as it truly made a huge difference in his adaption to our household. We look forward to spending many comfortable years with Noh-face and Billy.

Sam and Lexie

January was a busy month for adoptions so we are looking forward to more updates and more adoptions in February.  If you are interested in learning more about any of our available foster cats and kittens, please call 651-705-6264.

Mona the "Huntress"

Mona's (fka Onyx) family sent the following update and photos of Mona loving her new home, hanging out with her new friend Lila, and enjoying her new favorite past time - "hunting" squirrels and birds.

She is doing just great and is settling in quite well with our other cat Lila. In the beginning Lila wasn't sure what to make of her new sister. There was some hissing and some growling, but now they are friends. Not in the cuddle up together sense, but they will sleep on the same (human) bed or on the same rug on the heated bathroom floor. We figure at some point we'll actually find them snuggled up together.

It has been a joy to watch Mona settle into our home. She is incredibly affectionate and purrs as loud as a jet engine. She hasn't quite figured out if she likes to sit on laps, but she will come up next to you and literally plop over. She is obsessed with her feather on a string and will chase a fuzzy ball around the house with seemingly endless energy. Her favorite activity, by far, is "hunting" the birds, squirrels and rabbits that frequent the feeders outside our living room. If only she always remembered that there is a window between her and them (ouch)!

Thank you again for all of your great work - we tell others about you all often.
Sara, Heather, Lila and Mona

Sweet, Fluffy, Orange Kitties

Sometimes (or actually most of the time) a foster caregiver will take in a new cat and think "This kitty is so sweet and beautiful, they'll be adopted in no time".

That is how I felt about Kanga and I know that is how Fifi's, aka Ophelia's, foster caregivers have felt about her.  Both gorgeous, fluffy momma cats have cared lovingly for their kittens, watched all of their kittens be adopted to wonderful homes, learned to trust people, and have continued to patiently wait for their forever homes.

Fifi enjoys listening to her foster mom play the piano and whistle.  She gets along with the other cats in her foster home but wouldn't mind having a person all to herself as she loves people attention.  She likes to cuddle on her foster mom's lap and loves to chirp at birds through the window.

Kanga also gets along with the other adult cats in her foster home but wouldn't mind a home of her own.  She has been very sweet with new foster kittens and loves to play, play, play.  Kanga recently surprised me when she walked over to two strangers (to her), rolled over and let them pet her fluffy belly.

If you are interested in meeting or learning more about these two gorgeous orange girls, please contact Joan at 651-705-6264 or Cathy at 651-230-3263.
